As a women’s mindset coach for middle-aged women, I’ve had far too many conversations about the fear and anxiety that often come with growing older and the idea that it’s a sure sign our lives are all but over or that we are somehow decrepit, feeble, or over the hill. Seriously? I’m not sure about you, but I’m so over all the negativity. In fact, I absolutely adore growing older, or as I call it… evolving! I don’t see it as something miserable at all, I’ve only seen it as a blessing. And I know for a fact… this is definitely not our mothers’ mid-life!
I recently turned ‘double nickels’ in May, and the older I’ve gotten, the more in love with my ‘self’ and life I’ve become. I wouldn’t call it egotistical, but with each new passing year came an assurance that—yes, I am that ‘gem’, the ‘delight’, the ‘cat’s meow’, and then some. And I now wholeheartedly ‘get’ how Ms. Angelou felt when she put pen to paper and created the masterpiece, “Phenomenal Woman”.
With aging gracefully comes a confidence that’s mind-blowing, beyond comprehension, and as real as the grass is green. And I want every middle-age woman to feel the same way! So, in this post, I’ll share with you why it’s so important that we embrace our individual journey of aging as a reason for celebration and appreciation, and something we should own and take pride in.
Here are just a few of the countless reasons why aging is the bomb!
We get to unleash our realness, unapologetically:
Honey, let me tell you. It’s like putting on your favorite pair of shoes or jeans and slipping into that feeling of comfort and familiarity. You know… the ‘oh yeah, dis’ me’ kind of feeling. An awareness of authenticity and freedom. Where we no longer feel the need to conform to societal norms or live up to certain standards. Instead, we embrace our individuality and follow our own path, breaking free from the chains of expectations from others. Sure, we’re mindful of what we put in our bodies, but if we want to eat a slice of triple chocolate cake at 11 pm, so what? We no longer obsess over calorie counts or whether or not we only did thirty crunches instead of the suggested fifty. The beauty of getting older lies in the liberation to be who we truly are, without the need of validation from anyone. Being comfortable in your own skin. Pure, bona-fide self-acceptance. I tell you… it’s an incredibly mind-blowing power!
We’ve gained insight and awareness:
As we go through life, we accumulate an abundance of knowledge and insight. We become a walking wealth of wisdom and experience. We’ve lived, loved, learned, gained knowledge, honed our skills, and developed a unique perspective that holds great value. Whether through mentoring, volunteering, or sharing our stories and lessons learned, we have the power to make a difference in the lives of others. Our contributions are not limited by age but enriched by it. We become catalysts for change, using our voices and experiences to advocate for what we believe in. What we’ve gone through has shaped us into the refined women we are today, equipped with the power to inspire, uplift and guide others on their own journeys. Our wisdom becomes an inspiration and encouragement, not only for ourselves but also for those around us.
Our emotional intelligence has increased:
As middle-aged women, we gain more experience as time goes by, deepening our emotional intelligence. We start getting better at understanding our own emotions and, believe it or not, we even start picking up on how others are feeling. It’s like we develop this empathy superpower where we can really relate to what other people are going through. We definitely know how to ‘read the room’. We develop perception, compassion, and a greater understanding of the human experience. This emotional intelligence enhances our relationships, enabling us to connect on a deeper level, offer support, and foster meaningful connections with loved ones. We’ve even learned how to keep our cool and stay calm and composed during difficult conversations or conflicts. We understand where the other person is coming from and see things from their perspective. That means we can handle disagreements with empathy and work towards solutions that work for everyone. Creating a safe and nurturing space where all parties can talk openly and trust each other. This, in turn, fosters stronger and more fulfilling connections with our loved ones, friends, and colleagues.
Our self-discovery and personal-growth are on point:
Getting older provides us with an opportunity for profound self-discovery and personal growth. As we evolve, we get to find ourselves and grow as individuals. It’s a chance to prioritize our happiness, dreams, and desires without apologies, or concerning ourselves with the expectations of others. Each year becomes a new and exciting chapter, leading us closer to uncovering our passions and becoming the women God created us to be. We’re no longer bound by the limitations we once believed in. This opens the door to opportunities we never considered, like starting that business we once thought was impossible or picking up and starting over in a brand new city (something I did). Who knows? The options are unlimited. When we tap into this greatness the possibilities are endless, and the journey is absolutely fabulous!
We’ve developed genuine relationships:
As we mature, we learn to appreciate the beauty of authentic connections. We start to realize how awesome it is to have real friendships and understand the importance of surrounding ourselves with people who uplift, support, and inspire us. Our social circles may become smaller, but the love and bond we have for each other get stronger. We cultivate meaningful friendships, based on shared values and experiences, where laughter, support, and sisterhood are the glue that bind and keep us together. It’s not about having a bunch of friends, but having ones that really matter. It’s quality, not quantity. These relationships become a source of strength, encouragement, and joy for us.
We’ve learned to embrace the beauty of aging:
Society tries (every single day) to tell us what the beauty standards are. Well guess what? They can go sit down somewhere with that, because we’ve taken matters into our own hands and redefined what beauty looks like on our own terms. We recognize that true beauty comes from within and transcends age or societal expectations. We embrace our laugh lines, our gray hair, and the stories etched on our faces. They’re a celebration of the journey we’ve traveled and testaments to a life well-lived. They are indeed blessings! We ooze with confidence, because we know that our beauty shines from the inside out. And no external expectations can ever dim our light!
I’m here to tell you… middle age is where it’s at, ladies! It brings with it a strength, resilience, and fearlessness that only life’s challenges can shape. It’s toughened us up and made us stronger than ever. We’ve weathered storms, overcome obstacles, and we still came out on top! We decided that our challenges would make us, not break us. Our ability to adapt, bounce back, and seriously thrive under pressure becomes a testament to our resilience. Our resilience is unmatched, inspiring those around us to face their own challenges head-on with unwavering determination. We demonstrate that setbacks are merely stepping stones to greatness, and our relentless resolve becomes a force to be reckoned with.
We’ve become an inspiration to younger generations:
Getting older has its perks! We get to be mentors and show the way to those who are on their own paths. As we embrace the journey of aging, we unknowingly become trailblazers and role models for younger generations. Our confidence, wisdom, and realness shine through, capturing the attention and earning the respect of those still trying to figure things out and finding their way. By doing our thing and embracing our own unique path, we show others that getting older is not a barrier but a gateway to a more fulfilling and empowered life. We become beacons of hope, breaking the stereotypes and societal expectations that come with aging. Through our actions and words, we inspire younger women to embrace their own journeys, love themselves no matter what, and go after their dreams with zero fear.
We prioritize self-care and well-being:
Aging brings with it a profound understanding of the importance of self-care and well-being. We recognize that to fully enjoy life, pour into others, and make the most of every moment, we must nurture our own physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health first. We understand that our bodies are precious vessels that deserve love and care. With the wisdom we’ve gained, we prioritize self-care practices that replenish our energy, restore our balance, feed our spirit, and bring joy to our lives. Whether it’s indulging in regular exercise, practicing mindfulness and meditation, connecting with God, or engaging in activities that bring us pure bliss, we understand that investing in our well-being is a non-negotiable part of aging gracefully. By doing so, we inspire others to prioritize their own self-care and create a life filled with vitality and fulfillment.
We’ve rediscovered the joy of playfulness:
Low key, this is probably one of my favorites, lol. The cool thing about growing older is that we don’t have to get permission from anyone to tap into our inner child. Actually, it’s a chance for us to rediscover that sense of playfulness and spontaneity we had when we were kids. But unfortunately, some of us have lost this sixth sense of adventurism. The cool thing about growing older, though, is that at any given time, we can give ourselves the green light to do things that make us feel giddy and excited. Think about it—whether it’s dancing and singing (in public) along to your favorite song, picking up a paintbrush and unleashing your creativity, writing a book (which I did here), jet-setting off to new places, or just having a good old-fashioned sleepover with your girlfriends and laughing all night long, just because—we’re bringing back that joy and wonder into our lives. We’re all about those moments of pure happiness and finding delight in the little things that make life awesome, without caring what anyone has to say (especially the pruny, fuddy duds 🙄). As we get older, let’s embrace our inner child and let that playful spirit shine. There’s no shame in having fun and relishing in the simplest pleasures life has to offer. It’s all about enjoying the ride and living life to the fullest. Holding on to our child-like wonder allows us to embrace the freedom to explore new passions and pursue lifelong dreams.
We get to leave a legacy:
Growing older allows us to take a moment to look back and think about the legacy we want to leave behind. We contemplate the impact we’ve made on the world and what more we can bring to the table. Whether it’s through our professional accomplishments, creative pursuits, or the positive influence we have on our loved ones and the communities we’re a part of, we recognize that our presence does matter and we do have something to offer. We realize that our existence holds weight and significance. We’re driven to make a change to create a lasting impression that will motivate generations to come.
So let’s flip the script on aging ladies, and celebrate the magic that lies within each of us with each passing year. It’s an adventure of introspection, wisdom, and embracing our uniqueness. Getting older isn’t something to fear—it’s an opportunity to flourish and live life on our own terms.
