With soaring mountains, alpine lakes, and charming quaint villages, Germany is the ultimate destination for road trippers. Besides the thrill of driving on the Autobahn (which is an experience in itself), you’ll get to see some of the most diverse landscapes in Europe.

Eibsee
Nestled near the border with Austria, Eibsee is one of those places that will take your breath away the second you see it. It sits at the foothills of the Zugspitze, the tallest mountain in Germany. That, along with the lush, forested hills, makes for one spectacular backdrop. The water is bright turquoise and dotted with eight tree-covered islands, which you can explore by boat.
Grainau
Although we only stayed here for two nights (Haus Sonnenschein – check them out!), this adorable village is worth exploring if you have the time. The views of the craggy mountains (including the Zugspitze) can be seen from every angle. You’ll also be surrounded by traditional Bavarian-style homes.
Berchtesgaden
Located on the southeastern point of Germany lies Berchtesgaden. This town has a rich history, playing a significant role during WWII. However, it’s now a popular destination for locals and tourists due to its central location near the Berchtesgaden Alps and Berchtesgaden National Park.
If you’re staying here overnight, we can highly recommend Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden. It’s a stunning hotel with modern rooms and jaw-dropping views of the Alps right from your private patio.

Wank Panoramaberg
The cable car up the top of the Zugspitze is expensive, but you can still get the same alpine views by taking the Wank Panoramaberg (yes – we know it’s a hilarious name for a mountain!). In just 20 minutes, you’ll be whisked to the top of the 1,780-meter mountain, where you can enjoy the pristine views and grab a bite to eat at the restaurant on top.
Hirschbichl
If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination – this is it. A short drive west of Berchtesgaden sits Hirschbichl. It can be a little complicated to find or get to (we had to park our car in Austria and walk back over the German border). However, the unspoiled views of mountains and forest made it worth it.
There’s an adorable farm here called Bindalm, which makes a great pit stop for drinks or a snack. The owners make their own cheeses, milk, and meats, so it’s a real farm-to-table experience.
Königssee
Königsee is arguably the most popular lake in the area, and for a good reason! This fjord-like lake has some of the greenest waters we’ve seen. Plus, the backdrop of the Alps doesn’t hurt either. While you’re here, take the Königssee Schifffahrt, an electric boat that cruises around the lake. It drops you off at the St. Bartholomä church, which can only be reached by boat or by hiking through the mountains.
Your boat captain will even play a trumpet to demonstrate the legendary “Königssee Echo.” It’s a unique experience to hear the sounds reverberate from the nearby mountains!
