When I first posted about Micanopy, Florida, on Instagram, I knew only four facts about this charming town: It is the oldest inland town in Florida, it is 10 miles away from Gainesville, it was founded in 1821, and it was named after Seminole Chief Micanopy. I had seen this town on social media before and thought nothing of it, but as I stood at the center of this small town, I realized there was more to this place. With its towering oak trees perfectly lining the streets of the historic downtown district, this peaceful town is a hidden gem stuck in time.
While I do not recommend making a long trip to visit Micanopy, Florida, I suggest adding this to your travel plans. And if you are still unsure if you should go to this small town, keep reading as I list why Micanopy should be on your bucket list.

Micanopy’s Role in Movie History
As the comments started rolling in on my Instagram reel of Micanopy, many pointed out the exciting movie history of this charming town. One, I wasn’t aware existed (since I hadn’t done any prior research before posting). The first few comments mentioned the movie Doc Hollywood, featuring Michael J. Fox, which came out in 1991, but as more and more people continued their conversations, another movie was mentioned, the 1983 film Cross Creek, based on Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.
I haven’t seen either one, but knowing that this was a filming location and that Michael J. Fox was once where I stood made this place even better. If you’re a movie buff, you may want to visit just to say you were in the filming location of Doc Hollywood.

The Famous Figure Buried in Micanopy
While I don’t usually go to towns and cities to visit cemeteries or because someone was buried there, it’s always interesting to know where certain people were buried. One that came up quite a bit in the comments section of my reel was that River Phoenix’s ashes were scattered on his family farm in Micanopy, Florida. I hate to say it, but I didn’t know who that was until I looked him up. Imagine my shock when I found out that he is the brother of Joaquin Phoenix (Best known for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in the 2005 film Walk the Line. There are other famous figures buried in Micanopy, such as Marjorie Harris Carr, and the Seminole leaders.

Charming Shops, Stays, and Delicious Eats
If the above still doesn’t convince you to add Micanopy, Florida, to your bucket list, perhaps this will. The Historic Downtown District has some wonderful spots to check out. From picturesque antique shops to delectable eats, this small town is the perfect escape from city life. If you’re looking to make this an overnight stay, there is the Herlong Mansion, which is the prettiest bed and breakfast I’ve seen outside of St. Augustine.
The Herlong Mansion was built in 1845. At the time, it was just a farm house until the Herlong’s moved in and remodeled it into what it looks like today. This Bed and Breakfast is a popular retreat with its Victorian beauty and historical charm. There are about ten guest rooms and two independent cottages.

Museums and Art Galleries
While strolling through Micanopy, I noticed a museum and some art galleries. While I did not get to check the museum out, I did go to Gallery Under the Oaks, which was such a nice stop. Not only did I have a wonderful chat with the gallery owner, but I also learned a lot about all the wonderful pieces there.
If you’d like to explore the museums and galleries, here’s a list:

Entertainment
When it comes to entertainment, there doesn’t seem to be much in the area (unless you are easily entertained by outdoor live music). During my trip to Micanopy, I did stumble upon a musician playing music outdoors by the Shady Oak Gallry and Studio building. Aside from that, the only other place I found in Micanopy was The Stomp Barn Ranch, which is a Live Music and Christian Dance Hall.
