Romance Was Born Pre-Fall 2025 Lookbook

Romance Was Born has unveiled its Spring Summer 2025 collection, showcasing its signature blend of creativity, nostalgia, and craftsmanship. Presented as a lookbook, the collection draws inspiration from the brand’s Spring 2025 show, which took over Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art pop-up bar and reimagined it as a whimsical prom or 1980s-style wedding reception. The aesthetic evokes a world of pink taffeta, baby’s breath, balloons, and heartfelt sentimentality.

Weddings have increasingly become central to Romance Was Born’s vision since the introduction of their bridal line in 2021. The brand has developed a reputation for creating custom bridal pieces made by hand, often utilizing upcycled and heirloom fabrics such as Venetian crochet. This commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship extends to the Spring Summer collection, which leans heavily on themes of transformation, aspiration, and personal growth, elements echoed in the cult Australian film “Muriel’s Wedding.”

Drawing on the kitschy and camp sensibilities of the film, Romance Was Born collaborated with the National Sound and Film Archive of Australia to incorporate iconic stills into their designs. Opera coats and ball gowns became canvases for this cinematic homage, while salvaged wedding veils were repurposed into a fluttering skirt adorned with pink taffeta bows. Upcycled materials appeared throughout the collection, including faded floral bed sheets transformed into a heart-shaped dress. The palette and detailing of certain pieces referenced nostalgic elements, such as a Swiss lace tiered dress reminiscent of vintage cassette players.

The collection’s elegance was underpinned by the brand’s ability to balance exuberance with refinement. Embroidery by longtime collaborator Meaghan Pelham added an intimate touch, including poetic phrases on key pieces. Standout designs included a column dress adorned with paillette confetti and a cocktail dress composed entirely of heart motifs. The absence of daywear signaled a deliberate focus on occasionwear, aligning with the brand’s current trajectory.

Romance Was Born continues to expand its presence, with plans to reignite wholesale accounts in early 2025 and the potential for a permanent boutique following the success of their pop-up store. Celebrating nearly two decades in the fashion industry, the brand has solidified its position with a distinctive aesthetic that merges humor, sentimentality, and a commitment to craftsmanship. The Spring Summer 2025 collection exemplifies their evolution while staying true to their roots.
