Understand phobias and regain control

Ever wonder why that completely harmless spider sends you into a frenzy? Or why your heart races at the thought of public speaking? It’s not because you’re being overly dramatic (well, maybe a little 😜), but because your unconscious mind has created a phobia that often defies all logic.

Phobias—fast to create, stubborn to shift

Most phobias aren’t the result of years of exposure. They’re often created in the blink of an eye, during a moment when your mind and body decided that something was a bit too much to handle.

It’s like a first-day-on-the-job minder, kicking up a fuss over anything it deems threatening, even if the ‘threat’ in question is a balloon, or that innocent spider minding its own business in the bath.

What are phobias?

Phobias are usually completely irrational—at least to your conscious mind. But let’s not forget that your unconscious mind is the true genius behind these quirks.

Maybe you had a sudden fear response to heights, and voilà! Suddenly your brain thinks heights are a constant threat, locking in that fear. It’s created a negative association; a prime—and extreme—example of one-time anchoring.

Symptoms of phobias

Even the word can produce an unwanted response! That’s right, many people will have a phobic response just hearing the word: the label for their phobia.

Once that phobic pattern is set, it sticks around like an unwelcome houseguest—refusing to leave until you finally do something about it.

And this is exactly where most desensitisation programmes fall flat. They can take ages to make a difference, chipping away at the problem with all the speed and enthusiasm of a teenager getting up early at the weekend.

But why is this?

Because desensitisation tries to address the issue at the conscious level, where all the ‘rational’ thoughts live. Meanwhile, your unconscious mind is happily ignoring those efforts and sticking with what it knows best: panic at the sight of bees, bridges, or blood. It’s a bit like trying to negotiate with a toddler—good luck with that!

Examples of phobias I’ve helped people resolve

Over the years, I’ve worked with many people to resolve a whole variety of phobias. You’d be surprised at some of the things people are afraid of—birds, traffic roundabouts (yes, really), bridges, merging onto the motorway, drowning, dogs, flying, snakes, public speaking, needles, clowns, blood, worms… the list goes on!

I even helped someone jump off a bridge. Don’t worry, her phobia of heights prevented her achieving a rite of passage by jumping off the footbridge across the estuary here in Raglan!

NLP: Cutting to the root of the problem

The NLP phobia cure can be the game-changer. By reprogramming these automatic responses, we build new, calmer associations—ones that don’t involve running for the hills at the sight of a worm, or sending you into a cold sweat at the mention of public speaking.

One of the best things about this NLP process is just how simple and stress-free it can be. You don’t need to brace yourself for weeks of reliving past fears or facing your phobias head-on. And it doesn’t require you to relive trauma or spend months talking about your fears.

Instead, the process gently guides your mind to rewire those old, outdated responses without ever dragging you through the emotional muck. It’s a bit like clicking ‘reset’ on your brain’s reaction to a phobic trigger—no drama, no fuss, and in just one session.

Many people find it surprisingly easy, and even calming, to go through the process. By the end, you might just wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!
