When you enter the Pratt, you can explore all the culture, science, and art of the Kachemak Bay Region in one building. From native culture to Alaskan homesteading, you’ll learn about this land that Sam Pratt called home from 1936 to his final days in 1974.
Evening: Homer Spit & Dinner
The Homer Spit is a long, narrow finger of land that juts 4.5 miles into Kachemak Bay. It’s the end of the road and the beginning of a grand adventure. Spend your evening in a lively hub of shops, restaurants, and tour companies. Stop by the iconic Salty Dawg Saloon for a drink and a photo in its quirky dollar-bill-covered interior. Enjoy dinner at AJ’s Oldtown Steakhouse & Tavern, a casual steakhouse located in the heart of Old Town along the waterfront.
After dinner, retreat to the Homer Inn & Spa, your home away from home during your visit. The cozy rooms, complete with fireplaces and luxurious amenities, offer the perfect space to unwind after a full day of exploration.

Not only does Homer have the most halibut charters but their guests land the most of these famous flat fish. Did you know that they can group over 8’ long and weigh up to 500 lbs? When they get this big, they’re called Barn Doors because of their unique geometry. Companies like Tutka Tours or Mako’s Water Taxi provide excellent options. Keep an eye out for sea otters, whales, and puffins as you explore the bay.

Afternoon: Grewingk Glacier Lake Hike
Take a water taxi to Kachemak Bay State Park for the Grewingk Glacier Lake Trail. The park is known for some lung busting climbs, but I found this 3.2 mile trail worth the effort. Even though it’s often considered the easiest hike in Kachemak Bay, you’ll see a stunning glacier-fed lake surrounded by floating icebergs that will certainly take your breath away. Don’t forget to pack a picnic and bring along a burrito from Alibi Bar and Cafe for a satisfying meal during your hike.
Pro Tip: Make sure you plan your hike accordingly to ensure you can make it back to your water taxi.
Evening: Fireside Relaxation
After an adventurous day, unwind back at your accommodation. During my stay at the Homer Inn & Spa, I fell in love with its cozy and serene atmosphere. The rooms are beautifully designed with a warm and inviting vibe, complete with fireplaces and luxurious linens.
My favorite feature was the private hot tub overlooking the ocean—there’s nothing quite like soaking in warm water while taking in the breathtaking Alaskan scenery. It was the ultimate way to relax after a day of adventure! What’s more, the staff are incredibly welcoming and ensured my stay was absolutely perfect.

Now that you’ve experienced Homer, it’s time to chart a course around the bay and discover the host of tiny villages and unique experiences beyond land’s end.

Kachemak Bay is still a thriving fishing community, but it’s luring in an up-and-coming art community with its beautiful bays.Take a water taxi to Halibut Cove, a charming community known for its floating boardwalks and art galleries. Alternatively, consider a boat tour to Seldovia, a quaint town across Kachemak Bay with artisanal shops, scenic trails, and a tranquil atmosphere.
