During my two-week trip to Australia, one place that stood out was the Gold Coast. My dad had been dreaming about it for years—something about the high-rise skyline mixed with golden beaches reminded him of South Beach, Miami, but with an Aussie twist. And honestly? He was right.
The Gold Coast is where urban energy meets coastal paradise. It’s where skyscrapers rise above soft white sand, where you can spend the morning surfing and the evening at a trendy restaurant, and where locals know how to balance work and play better than anywhere else.
We visited in August, during Australian winter, and one of the first things I noticed? The weather was nice. With 300 days of sunshine annually, even during winter, temperatures rarely drop below 15°C (59°F), making it a year-round destination. If you’re craving the Aussie sunshine, this is one of the best places to soak it all in.
But beyond the sun and surf, the Gold Coast is all about lifestyle. Life here is a perfect balance of city and nature, with plenty of outdoor activities, from hiking in national parks to surfing iconic waves. In this Gold Coast travel guide, I’ll cover where to stay, the best beaches, top things to do, and where to eat, so you can plan the perfect trip.
Where to Stay in Gold Coast: Best Areas & Hotels
Choosing the right area is key to enjoying your trip. While Surfers Paradise is the most famous neighborhood, Broadbeach and Burleigh Heads are often better picks for travelers looking for a more upscale or laid-back vibe.
Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise is the most well-known part of Gold Coast, famous for its skyscraper-lined beaches. While great for first-time visitors, locals often avoid it due to the crowds. The restaurant scene isn’t the best, but there are some gems worth checking out. In terms of oceanfront high-rises, it has lots to offer.
Best Stays:
Broadbeach

If you want a more sophisticated, less touristy area, Broadbeach is a fantastic choice. This is where locals prefer to dine, with a great restaurant scene, luxury hotels, and the famous Pacific Fair Shopping Centre.
Best Stays:
Burleigh Heads

Burleigh Beach and Palm Beach are beloved by locals, offering stunning beaches, great waves for surfers, and cute cafes. It’s also home to Burleigh Heads National Park, where you can take the scenic Oceanview Walk.
Best Stays:
Coolangatta
Coolangatta is quieter than the northern beaches and offers some of the best surf breaks in Australia, including Snapper Rocks and Kirra Beach. It’s also the closest area to Gold Coast Airport.
Best Stays:
The Gold Coast Hinterland
For a completely different side of the Gold Coast, head inland to the hinterland, where you’ll find lush rainforests, waterfalls, and charming villages. This area is perfect for those who want a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. The hinterland offers luxury lodges, rainforest cabins, and boutique stays, making it an excellent choice for honeymooners, wellness seekers, and nature lovers.

Best Things to Do on the Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is packed with incredible activities, whether you’re looking for thrill-seeking adventures, scenic nature walks, or relaxing beachside experiences. Here are some of the best things to do while you’re here.
1. Whale Watching
This was an unforgettable experience—and made even more special as I did it on my 31st birthday with my sister. We went on the 11 AM whale-watching tour and we were beyond lucky. We saw one whale breaching in the distance and then three others—two of which stayed next to our boat for a while, playing, waving at us, and spraying from their blowholes.
If you’re planning a trip to the Gold Coast between April and October, this is a must-do activity. It’s the migration season for humpback whales as they travel from Antarctica to Australia, and you have a high chance of spotting them. I recommend taking a bigger boat for safety and comfort, and don’t forget to book the tour in advance as tours can sell out during peak season.

2. Coastal Walks
The Gold Coast is filled with breathtaking coastal walks, with over 30 different trails ranging from easy beachside strolls to multi-day hikes. Here are some of the best and easiest ones:
- Burleigh Heads National Park – Oceanview Walk: This is the walk we did, and it was absolutely beautiful. The 1.2 km one-way trail (about 30 minutes) follows the coastline and offers stunning ocean views. It’s an easy and relaxing walk, perfect for catching sight of humpback whales during winter and spring.
- Burleigh Heads National Park – Rainforest Circuit: If you prefer something slightly longer, the Rainforest Circuit is a 2.3 km return loop (about 45 minutes) that takes you through lush greenery, giving a completely different feel from the Oceanview Walk. This one is a moderate hike but still very doable.
- Palm Beach (Tarrabora Wetlands) to Elephant Rock in Currumbin: A longer coastal walk at 4.6 km one-way (about 2 hours return), this trail takes you through Tarrabora Wetlands and then opens up to Currumbin Beach. It’s a moderate hike and a great way to experience different landscapes in one walk.

3. SkyPoint Observation Deck
One of the tallest buildings in the Southern Hemisphere, the SkyPoint Observation Deck offers unbeatable panoramic views of the Gold Coast, from its canals and high-rises to the vast Pacific Ocean.
For the best experience, I highly recommend visiting at sunset when the city is bathed in golden light. There’s also a restaurant and bar at the top, so you can enjoy a meal or a drink with a view. Book your tickets in advance, as queues can get long, especially on weekends.

4. Q1 Climb
If you love adrenaline-filled experiences, the Q1 Climb is for you. This is not for the faint-hearted, but if you enjoy thrill-seeking activities, it’s an incredible way to get a bird’s-eye view of the Gold Coast.
The experience takes you to the top of the Q1 building, where you’ll be harnessed in and guided along the exposed rooftop. The views from 270 meters above sea level are absolutely breathtaking. Since this activity sells out quickly, make sure to book the Q1 climb ahead of time.
5. Surfing
The Gold Coast is one of the most famous surfing destinations in the world, attracting both beginners and professionals. This region has been the training ground for surf legends for more than 30 years, and it continues to be a hub for some of the world’s best surfers.
If you’re a beginner, you can take a surf lesson at Coolangatta, where you’ll find gentle, rolling waves that are perfect for learning. For more experienced surfers, the Gold Coast has some of the best point breaks on the planet, including:
- Snapper Rocks – Home to the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and known for its legendary right-hand point break.
- Kirra – One of the most iconic surf spots, famous for its hollow, fast barrels.
- Burleigh Heads – A classic right-hand point break and a favorite among locals.
Famous surfers like Stephanie Gilmore, Mick Fanning, and Joel Parkinson all honed their skills here, and if you’re lucky, you might even see some pros out in the water.

6. Day trip to Lamington National Park
If you’re looking to escape the beaches and explore the lush hinterland of the Gold Coast, Lamington National Park is a must-visit. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed park is home to ancient rainforests, stunning waterfalls, and incredible wildlife. Lamington National Park is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, with trails ranging from easy strolls to full-day treks. Some of the most famous hikes include:
- Treetop Walkway at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat – Walk 15 meters above the ground on a suspension bridge through the rainforest canopy.
- Box Forest Circuit – A 10 km return hike that takes you through lush rainforest, waterfalls, and scenic lookouts.
- Elabana Falls – One of the most photographed waterfalls in the park, reachable via a moderate hike from O’Reilly’s.
If you don’t have a car, don’t worry—you can book a day trip from Surfers Paradise that includes guided hikes, wildlife encounters, and scenic viewpoints. I didn’t have time to visit this on my trip, but it looked amazing, and I’ll definitely prioritize it next time.
7. Parasailing Over the Gold Coast
For a fun and unique way to see the coastline, try parasailing. You’ll be lifted high above the water, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the skyline, beaches, and islands off the coast. Whether you go solo or tandem, it’s an exhilarating yet peaceful experience. Most parasailing tours leave from Main Beach, and the best time to go is early in the morning when the winds are calmer.
8. Hot Air Balloon Flight
For early risers, nothing beats the serenity of floating above the Gold Coast in a hot air balloon. This experience gives you incredible sunrise views over the beaches, city skyline, and the Hinterland.
Flights usually depart at dawn, and you’ll glide over rolling green hills, vineyards, and the coastline before landing for a champagne breakfast. This is one of the most peaceful and breathtaking activities on the Gold Coast, and it’s worth booking in advance to secure a spot.
Best Beaches on the Gold Coast
Although we visited in winter (August) and didn’t go for a swim, we were surprised by how many locals were still surfing and enjoying the ocean. The Gold Coast is known for its incredible beaches, and if you’re planning a trip, here are some of the best ones to check out (found these through researching online):
- Burleigh Heads – A favorite among locals, known for its stunning views, strong surfing culture, and grassy picnic areas. Perfect for watching the sunset over the skyline.
- Palm Beach – Consistently ranked as one of Queensland’s cleanest beaches, offering a peaceful, less crowded experience. Great for long beach walks and family outings.
- Surfers Paradise – The most iconic beach, famous for its high-rise skyline, lively atmosphere, and surf culture. It’s a great place to experience the Gold Coast vibe, but it’s also very touristy.
- Broadbeach – A family-friendly beach with plenty of space, fewer crowds than Surfers Paradise, and easy access to great restaurants and shopping at Pacific Fair.
- Main Beach – A more upscale, quieter beach with luxury resorts and a laid-back atmosphere, ideal for picnics and BBQs.
- Currumbin Beach – A scenic spot near Currumbin Alley, great for beginner surfers, rock pools, and estuary views.
- Coolangatta – Located on the southern end of the Gold Coast, this beach has beautiful ocean views, a relaxed vibe, and top surf breaks.
- Kirra Beach – One of the most famous surf spots, home to crystal-clear waters and legendary waves. Even if you don’t surf, it’s a great place to relax.
- Rainbow Bay & Snapper Rocks – Known for their epic surf breaks but also great for a quieter beach day. Rainbow Bay has calmer waters, making it good for families, while Snapper Rocks is a must-visit for surf lovers.

Where to eat on the Gold Coast
The Gold Coast food scene surprised me with its variety—whether you’re looking for modern Australian cuisine, beachfront dining, or trendy cafés, there’s something for every taste. Here are some of the best restaurants I tried (and a few I had my eye on).
Social Eating House (Broadbeach)
This was my favorite restaurant on the Gold Coast. Located in Broadbeach, Social Eating House focuses on modern Australian cuisine with a shared-plates concept. We had the burrata with figs, sashimi of the day, tempura bugs with Malay curry, and slow-cooked lamb—all incredible. The wine selection is fantastic, and the atmosphere is stylish but unpretentious.
Average Price: $$$ (~$50–$80 AUD per person)
Reservations: Essential for dinner
The Tropic (Burleigh Heads)
Set right on the water at Burleigh Pavilion, The Tropic is the perfect place for sunset drinks and a laid-back yet elegant meal. The atmosphere is lively, with ocean views and a coastal-chic design. We stopped by for aperitivo, trying the Maybe Basil cocktail, Iberico ham, olives, and pita bread—all delicious. If you’re coming for dinner, the seafood-focused menu is a standout.
Average Price: $$$ (~$50–$75 AUD per person)
Reservations: Recommended, especially for sunset
La Calabrese (Surfers Paradise)
One of the few upscale dining options in Surfers Paradise, La Calabrese serves Italian dishes with high-quality ingredients. We started with prosciutto and focaccia, followed by grilled octopus with salad, and everything was excellent. Their pizza is a must-try, and the ambiance is stylish yet welcoming.
Average Price: $$ – $$$ (~$35–$60 AUD per person)
Reservations: Recommended for dinner
Etsu Izakaya (Mermaid Beach)
I didn’t personally try this but it was on the list! Etsu Izakaya is a Japanese izakaya-style restaurant hidden behind an unmarked door—once inside, you’ll find a dimly lit, vibrant space with amazing sushi, sashimi, and robata-grilled dishes. It’s one of the most popular spots on the Gold Coast, so reservations are a must.
Average Price: $$$ (~$50–$80 AUD per person)
Reservations: Highly recommended
Rick Shores (Burleigh Heads)
This was the other one I wanted to try but didn’t get to it. Based on what I researched, if you’re looking for incredible food with an even better location, Rick Shores is ideal! It’s right on the sand at Burleigh Beach and they’re famous for their bug rolls alongside their Asian-fusion dishes.
Average Price: $$$ (~$60–$90 AUD per person)
Reservations: Essential, books out weeks in advance

Where to Buy Groceries in the Gold Coast
If you’re staying at a high-rise, you might as well have one home-cooked meal with a view! We did this one night and it was great. We ended up going to WholeHorts for groceries, it’s a high-quality organic produce grocery store. If you want to get wine, remember that alcohol is not sold in supermarkets in Australia, you’ll need to visit a separate liquor store. We went to BWS.

Where is the Gold Coast Located?
The Gold Coast is in Queensland, Australia, about 66 km (41 miles) south of Brisbane. It stretches along the southeastern coastline of the state, bordering New South Wales. The region is famous for its beaches, surfing spots, and national parks, making it a perfect addition to any Australia road trip itinerary.

How Far is the Gold Coast from Major Australian Destinations?
- Brisbane → Gold Coast: 1-hour drive (66 km)
- Byron Bay → Gold Coast: 1-hour drive (93 km)
- Sunshine Coast → Gold Coast: 2.5-hour drive (195 km)
- Sydney → Gold Coast: 9-hour drive (840 km)
- Uluru → Gold Coast: Flight needed (3.5 hours, via Brisbane or Sydney)
Can You Do a Road Trip to the Gold Coast?
Yes! The Gold Coast is an ideal stop on an East Coast Australia road trip. Many travelers start in Sydney or Brisbane and drive up or down the coast, stopping at places like:
- Brisbane – The capital of Queensland
- Byron Bay – A laid-back coastal town with world-famous beaches and a vibrant surf and wellness scene.
- Sunshine Coast – Known for Noosa’s national park, beaches, and Australia Zoo (home of Steve Irwin’s legacy).
If you’re doing a longer road trip, you can drive from the Gold Coast all the way up to Cairns to see the Great Barrier Reef, stopping at places like Fraser Island and Airlie Beach.
Do You Need a Car in the Gold Coast?
- If you only plan to stay in Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, or Burleigh Heads, you don’t need a car. The G:Link tram and Uber make it easy to get around.
- If you want to visit the hinterland, national parks, or nearby destinations like Byron Bay, renting a car is the best option. Otherwise, you can go on guided tours if you want to avoid driving.
How to Get to the Gold Coast
We arrived on the Gold Coast from Brisbane after flying in from Uluru (Ayers Rock Airport), but there are multiple ways to get here depending on where you’re coming from. The Gold Coast has its own airport (OOL), making it easy to fly in directly, but many travelers also arrive via Brisbane and make their way down the coast.
Flying to the Gold Coast
Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is the main airport serving the region, located in Coolangatta, about 30 minutes south of Surfers Paradise. It has domestic and international flights from cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and even some direct routes from New Zealand and Asia.
- Best for: Those flying directly to the Gold Coast.
- Airport transport: You can take an Uber, taxi, or SkyBus from the airport to different parts of the Gold Coast.
Arriving via Brisbane
Many travelers (including us) arrive through Brisbane Airport (BNE), which has more international connections. From Brisbane, you have a few options:
- By Train: The Airtrain runs from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast in about 90 minutes, stopping at several key locations like Helensvale, Nerang, and Robina.
- By Car: Driving from Brisbane to the Gold Coast takes around an hour via the Pacific Motorway (M1).
- By Bus: Coaches like Greyhound Australia and Con-X-ion offer shuttle services from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast.
If you’re already in Australia, you can also drive to the Gold Coast from Sydney, though it’s a long 9-hour road trip along the Pacific Highway.
How Many Days Do You Need in the Gold Coast?
The Gold Coast is the kind of place where you can stay for a weekend and get a taste of its beaches and city vibe, or spend a full week immersing yourself in everything it has to offer. If you’re just passing through, three days will let you explore the main beaches, take in the views from SkyPoint, and enjoy some of the best dining spots. But if you want to experience more—whether it’s whale watching, visiting the theme parks, or taking a day trip to the hinterland—four to five days is ideal.
If I had to recommend the perfect amount of time, I’d say four to five days (considering two are of travel). That gives you enough time to explore different neighborhoods, enjoy the beaches, try some great restaurants, and get a feel for the laid-back lifestyle. If you have five days or more, you can add a trip to Lamington National Park or even a visit to Byron Bay.

Best Time to Visit the Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is a year-round destination, thanks to its 300 days of sunshine and warm climate. But the best time to visit depends on the experience you’re after.
I visited in winter (August), and while I was expecting cooler weather, I was surprised to see so many people still swimming and surfing. The days were sunny and mild, making it the perfect time for outdoor activities like hiking, whale watching, and scenic coastal walks. The only downside? The ocean was a little too cold for me, but plenty of locals didn’t seem to mind.
If you’re looking for hot beach days, summer (December–February) is ideal. This is peak season, so expect crowds, higher prices, and humid weather. Autumn (March–May) offers warm but manageable temperatures with fewer crowds, and it’s a great time to explore the hinterland waterfalls after the summer rains. Spring (September–November) brings perfect beach weather without the extreme heat, making it another great time to visit.
Regardless of when you go, the Gold Coast rarely has bad weather, so you can’t go wrong—just pack accordingly!
