Amanda Ward’s Permanent Statue as a Lasting Symbol of Peace in London

Brian Haw (1949-2011) was one of the most prominent peace campaigners of our time, known for his unwavering commitment to advocating for peace through protest. Beginning in June 2001, he set up his peace camp at Parliament Square in Westminster, where he remained for nearly a decade, drawing attention to the human suffering caused by war, particularly in relation to the wars in Iraq and the foreign policies of the US and UK.

Brian’s presence became an integral part of the political landscape, engaging both the public and politicians on vital issues of peace and conflict. Among his notable supporters was the renowned street artist Banksy, who gifted ‘Petrol Head’ and ‘CND Soldiers’ for Haw’s peace camp.

Brian’s efforts culminated in the historic 2003 anti-war march that brought two million people to London’s streets, highlighting widespread discontent with military actions. Despite relentless attempts by authorities to silence him, Haw’s conviction never wavered, allowing him to remain at Westminster until just months before his passing to lung cancer in 2011.

To honour Brian’s legacy, a group of supporters, including fellow campaigner Michael Culver and actor Mark Rylance, have been raising funds to create a permanent statue of him, which will be installed facing the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth. The 78cm statue has been created by artist and friend Amanda Ward. This statue symbolises Brian Haw’s enduring influence, encouraging activism and a continued call for peace resonating across the nation.
