Warm Mediterranean sun, fresh, crisp air, incredibly blue, crystal-clean water and the most delicate, white and golden sand… welcome to Sardinia, the island of endless beaches!
Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily). However, getting around Sardinia island is quite easy. The length and width of Sardinia are approximately only 210 km by 110 km, while the total coastal length is about 1666 km.

Which part of Sardinia to stay: north or south?

It’s hard to choose the best part of Sardinia for accommodation because all of them offer some exceptional sites. Sardinia may be a small island, but it doesn’t mean that Sardinia north and south coasts are similar to each other.

The North Sardinia is often considered as a paradise for surfers. It’s also more commercial and definitely more crowded. In turn, the South Sardinia is filled with nature reserve parks and pristine, undisturbed wildlife, with the exception of Sardinia capital – Cagliari. Central Sardinia is usually overlooked by tourists, but it offers exquisite outdoor activities and spectacular countryside.

Travel tip: Instead of choosing north or south, pick the best flight to one of the main Sardinia airports (Olbia or Cagliari) and change your base during your stay.

Sardinia offers not only pure, undisturbed nature, but also charming cities with historical sights and exceptional landscape views. Moreover, Sardinia is like a micro-continent, where seemingly endless mountain ranges coexist with green woods and forests, agricultural plains, rivers, lakes and largely uninhabited, pristine territories.
To fully enjoy wonderful Sardinia holidays, we encourage you to rent a car. And don’t worry – driving around Sardinia is easy A car will let you explore Sardinia on your own terms, without being limited to only one area. Long winding roads connect one spectacular sight to another. Bend after bend, the views will take your breath away.
Travel tip: Be sure to check our driving in Sardinia road trip guide.

Sardinia is famous for its beautiful beaches and sheer, rocky coast with thousands of amazingly beautiful bays. Therefore, Sardinia island has everything you need for a wonderful, carefree holiday.
The beaches in Sardinia are not only considered to be among the most beautiful in the world but there are also so many of them that everyone can find his own beach on the island.
Sardinia beaches are suitable for every kind of tourist. From long, broad city beaches like Poetto in Cagliari, to small, very secluded beaches like Cala Domestica near Bugerru. From famous beaches in popular Sardinian resorts like Porto Pino, to wild, pristine beaches like di Piscinni.
Travel tip: Tuerredda beach in Teulada province is often considered the best beach in Sardinia, but we just fell in love with Cala Sinzias beach in Castiadas province (between Costa Rei and Villasimius regions). Be sure to check our posts about the best Sardinia beaches:

Picturesque Sardinia cities

Since there is a big chance that you will travel to Sardinia by plane to one of the major cities on the Sardinia island (Cagliari or Olbia) there is immediately a great opportunity to visit one of them.
Trust us, Sardinia cities are a joy to visit! Not only do they offer numerous attractions to keep you busy, but there is also a great number of archeological sites and remains, famous and highly ornamented monuments, beautiful towers and castles.
Sardinia cities are also a great opportunity to delve into Sardinia history, culture and culinary world.

Travel tip: While Olbia is the gateway to Sardinia’s northeast coast and famous Costa Smeralda, it offers few interesting tourist attractions. In our opinion, Cagliari is a better place to start your Sardinia holidays. Cagliari s not only a city of infinite views, but it’s is also a very peaceful city that is teeming with life. You will fall in love with Cagliari’s slow and steady rhythm – a place so pleasant that you might consider living there. Be sure to check our guide to Cagliari.

Sardinia mountains

The road through the mountains | Sardinia, Italy

Surprisingly (at least for a typical tourist), Sardinia is literally covered with mountains or mountain ranges that reach up as far as 1.834 meters (Punta la Marmora). This sometimes makes going through the island difficult, but at the same time, it makes Sardinia seem complete. The ever-changing landscapes look impressively beautiful.
Sardinia is full of hiking trails (both for beginners and climbing enthusiasts) and scenic road biking routes go through Sardinia wild mountainous vistas. There is never any shortage of surprises during cycling or hiking, especially in small local villages. Keep in mind though, that the weather in Sardinia can change dramatically.
Travel tip: If you love cycling or want to enjoy Sardinia hiking trails then the best time to visit Sardinia is from the beginning of April to the end of May and from the beginning of September to the end of October. We don’t advise hiking or cycling in Sardinia summer due to temperatures rising above 40 degrees Celsius.

Sardinia water sports holidays

Sardinia is one of the best destinations in Europe for water-sports enthusiasts and one that is definitely not too expensive. Excellent wind statistics (Sardinia is constantly beaten by the sirocco and mistral winds) and plenty of great spots make Sardinia a superb destination not only for professionals but also for amateurs who want to try windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, snorkeling etc.
In the summer it’s really worth to hire a boat or charter a yacht for a much different Sardinia experience. Alternatively, you could just join a boat snorkeling and diving tour to get the most out of your stay. Sardinia offers exquisite and enviable panoramas from the perspective of the sea.
Travel tip: Sa Colonia beach is one of the best destinations for surfers in the southern Sardinia, due to exposition to strong winds (avoid in case of Mistral winds). If you are a snorkeling and underwater fishing enthusiast than consider visiting Cala Domestica beach. For other watersports, we advise visiting Costa Rei beach or all in one place spot – Porto Pino.

Sardinia for families

Sardinia is one of the best places for family holidays in Europe, easily accessible thanks to three airports (Olbia, Cagliari, Alghero) and three main ports (Olbia, Cagliari and Porto Torres). Sardinia is also a very sunny and safe place for travelers (even in big cities like Cagliari). However, the most important thing is that there are many family resorts in Sardinia with facilities for kids and teenagers. Moreover, almost every beach in Sardinia we visited was perfect for the family holidays due to very clear, shallow water with a flat entrance and numerous beach activities available for hire. Something that will keep most children occupied throughout the holiday.
It’s worth noting that Sardinia beaches are generally clean and well-maintained – one thing that makes Sardinia better than Sicily. You will also be amazed by Sardinian’s hospitality and the number of shopping facilities, bars, restaurants and sports centers near many popular locations.
Travel tip: There are good options for day trips and excursions suitable for families on Sardinia island that can be organized directly at your accommodation.
