Searching for the Best Rice Terraces in Bali? Tegallalang is a Must

Searching for the Best Rice Terraces in Bali? Tegallalang is a Must

Posted on July 14, 2025 By rehan.rafique No Comments on Searching for the Best Rice Terraces in Bali? Tegallalang is a Must

Is Tegallalang worth visiting?

Sure is! It’s easy to get to, incredibly photogenic, and gives you a real taste of Bali’s rural charm.

What’s the difference between Tegallalang and Jatiluwih Rice Terraces?

Jatiluwih is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is much larger, quieter, and more rural than Tegallalang. It’s perfect for long walks and fewer crowds. Tegallalang is smaller, more tourist-friendly, and easier to visit on a quick day trip.

Can you walk through the Tegallalang Rice Terraces?

Yes! Look for signs that say “Rice Trekking” along the main road. Stairs will take you down into the terraces. You’ll likely come across locals asking for donations. I’d say IDR 5,000 to 10,000 is appropriate. So bring small notes, as you may pass multiple checkpoints. And, remember this isn’t a scam, it’s helping local villages who keep this area beautiful and allow you to explore their land.

When is the best time to go to Tegallalang Rice Terraces?

Time of day: Morning is best for light, cooler temperatures, and (slightly) fewer people. Avoid midday, as it’ll be way too hot!

Time of year: The rice is usually at its greenest during the growing season, which is just before the harvest (this typically happens in May-July), so March /April is the perfect time to go. But I’ve also been in September, and the rice terraces were equally beautiful.

What should I take with me?

* Water
* Hat or umbrella
* Sunscreen
* Comfortable shoes for walking (such as Birkenstocks, as they’re also suitable for the hot weather)
* Small notes for donations or parking

My Overall Experience at Tegallalang Rice Terraces

Tegallalang is definitely worth adding to your Bali itinerary. It might not be the hidden gem anymore, but it’s still incredibly beautiful and surprisingly peaceful in parts, especially if you go early. I’ve explored this area twice now and love it. Starting the day Abian Des Rice Terrace, wandering the fields, getting the best photos, & having a swing. Then, relaxing over lunch at Tis Cafe or one of the other spots close by! It really is the best addition to a Bali itinerary. And, even though I won’t claim it’s the best rice terrace in Bali, it’s certainly one of the most accessible and memorable.
