After a short jaunt from the airport, I found myself immersed in the vibrant city of Amritsar – with its winding corridors and hustle and bustle of shops, especially those selling food. After navigating Hukum Singh Road and a few meandering alleys, I landed at ‘The Earth Resort,’ nestled next to the Archaeological Survey of India office. If you’re ever unsure of your way, just remember to look for the Mohinder tea stall across the entrance gate or the district election office next to the hotel. After clearing a quick security check at the main gate, my car rolled up to the former 130-year-old Victorian Jubilee Hospital, now Urban Haat.

Its in-house herb garden is an absolute delight, offering an array of flavourful garnishes, like spicy mustard greens and pea twigs. During my stay, I was treated to a truly delightful culinary experience – from the mouth-watering Amritsari kulcha chole to the robust and flavourful chicken tandoori, the succulent butter chicken, and the always popular chaat – tantalising my taste buds beyond belief.
And let me tell you, these dishes tasted even better than they sounded – truly, a feast for the senses. The grand arch window of the Lutyens provided a perfect view of the forlorn relic of the 130-year-old Victoria Jubilee Hospital. To warm our hearts and fill our bellies, Chef Somesh Sharda prepared a feast of piping hot Shorba with basil-slicked mushrooms and bruschetta. The flavoursome earthy mushrooms, and enticing herbs combined with the mouth-watering crunch of the bruschetta.
To top it off, we were served a delightful grilled vegetable salad with carom seed dressing, Creole cottage cheese, and tandoori chicken with mustard rice, melding the Amritsari cuisine with a continental twist. The meal concluded with a small platter of desserts. Refresh your palate with a minty cocktail, spiked with local spices or traditional beverages like Lassi and Shikanjees.
