Thank you for your interest in participating in the 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service! This event support community gardens throughout Waco and celebrates the legacy of Dr. King in making a difference in our communities. Every individual volunteer must complete a registration form. If you are registering family members, please have each adult member complete a form and a legal parent/guardian complete a form for each child under the age of 18.
This year’s event is Monday, January 15, 2018, from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, with a bag lunch provided.
Registration will be open thru Wednesday, January 10th at 11:59 PM.
Here are brief descriptions of service sites and expected projects:
- Baylor Community Garden – lay foundation for garden shed, weeding, general garden maintenance
- Bells Hill Elementary- Completing a compost pile by moving ‘bricks’ and making the walls of the compost area taller and general garden maintenance.
- Carver Neighborhood Family Garden – general garden maintenance
- Children’s Garden and Outdoor Classroom (Lorena) – General garden maintenance and bed construction.
- Hewitt Community Garden (Hewitt) – Constructing teepee trellis: clearing ground, building, and prepare for planting. Work on pathways and mulch existing garden beds.
- Indian Springs Middle School- General garden maintenance and bed construction, raking leaves and organizing greenhouse.
- Keep Waco Beautiful – Clean out Miss Nellie’s Pretty Place (Cameron Park), preparing for mulch and site upgrades
- National Women in Agriculture Association Garden- General garden maintenance and bed construction.
- Tennyson Middle School- Trimming brushes, building compost bins with pallets, and adding sprinklers to flowerbeds.
- World Hunger Relief (Elm Mott) – volunteers will help us prepare our facilities for the Alternative Spring Break Season. This will include preparing landscapes, sanding and painting our world map, and cleaning out our accommodation facilities.
If you would like to donate funds toward supplies/materials that will be provided to certain locations please email [email protected]. We are specifically looking to update our glove collection (general work / garden gloves) and provide some child size wheelbarrows to school garden sites.
