If you read my last blog post on Marrakech, you’ll understand that the city is a true melting pot and feast for the senses. Itts dining scene is no exception. From vibrant spice markets to chic rooftop restaurants, this city offers a kaleidoscope of flavors that cater to every palate. While you can find plenty of international options to satisfy any craving, there’s something truly special about diving into the authentic tastes of Morocco – I wanted to take my tastebuds on a tour of Moroccan cuisine filled with simple yet rich spices. If you’re looking for an unforgettable culinary experience in the former imperial city, I have a few standout spots in mind that showcase the heart and soul of Marrakech’s rich food culture.
1. Le Tanja
We visited Le Tanja on our first night in Marrakesh, after a busy day of travelling, we were looking to instantly satisfy our craving for a tagine. Set in the lively Mellah district, Le Tanja combines traditional Moroccan cuisine with an elegant atmosphere, a guess a clue is in the name but the restaurant is well know for authentic, out of this world tagines. The warm lighting and intricate décor create a romantic setting, which transports you to a scene that you would see in a documentary on a destination. The restaurant is caters for everyone, allowing everyone to enjoy their taste of the local delicacy. I highly recommend trying the chicken tagine, it was mixed with rich flavours of lemon and dressed with olives, which added different dimensions to the dish. If you can, try and get a later booking after 7:30/8pm as towards 9pm, the entertainment begins with belly dancers followed by a series of local dances, which makes for a truly unique experience.
2. Nomad
Located in the heart of Marrakech’s Medina, Nomad is a modern twist on Moroccan dining. Its rooftop setting offers stunning views of the city, whilst offering a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of main square. Try and book for around the sunset as its location makes for a truly sensational view. By night, the venue is dressed with fairy lights and out come the blankets for that additional warmth. Whilst the days in Marrakesh are warm, the winds can bring a bit of a chill come nightfall, but that just adds to the unique experience of dining at Nomad. I’d recommend trying the chargrilled king prawns and the flavoursome, tender lamb chops.
3. Safran by Koya
A newer addition to Marrakesh’s culinary scene, Safran by Koya brings an innovative fusion of Moroccan and Asian flavours. The stylish interior and attention to detail make it a standout choice, along with the lively atmosphere that had us dancing in our chair through the night as the entertainment became more vibrant as the night went on. At the end of our meal, we were up on a feet doing the conga around the restaurant with other diners. A night to remember, that’s for sure. Highlights include the saffron-infused seafood risotto and the Moroccan-spiced sushi rolls, which offer a delightful blend of tradition and creativity.
4. Naranj
For a taste of Lebanon in Marrakech, Naranj is the place to go for a delicious spot of lunch. The sun-dappled wooden canopy terrace offers the perfect hideaway for a peaceful lunch in the sun. Naraj specialises in Middle Eastern dishes with a Moroccan twist. I can highly recommend the kofta wraps which were delectable, filled with spices and a richness that feels like it has been made with love by someone’s grandmother.
5. Café des Épices
Café des Épices is a laid-back spot ideal for a midday lunch or snack. Their menu features Moroccan classics like kefta sandwiches, which seem to be their signature dish, as you’ll see them flying out of the kitchen as every other table orders a portion or three, which is perfectly paired with a refreshing mint tea or ice-cold orange juice. It’s also a great place to people-watch while enjoying the bustling energy of the Marrakech Medina under the sun.
